Bihar: AIIMS Patna organises Snake Envenomation Awareness Programme

Patna, Sep 20 (UNI) The Department of Emergency Medicine, AIIMS Patna, organised a Snake Envenomation Awareness Programme at the OPD foyer of the hospital here today, spreading the crucial message of 'A snakebite can turn into a life-threatening emergency within a short time, but timely medical intervention can significantly improve outcomes' among the public.
This was informed by Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Patna, Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal. He said the highlight of the programme was an impactful Nukkad Natak performed by the nursing staff of the hospital, who used real-life situations and simple conversations to demonstrate what should -and should not- be done after a snakebite.
He said that through the street play, patients and attendants were sensitised about the importance of remaining calm, minimising unnecessary movement and reaching a healthcare facility without delay. The performance also highlighted the dangers of relying on unscientific remedies and delaying professional medical treatment.
The audience was specifically cautioned against practices such as cutting or sucking the bite wound, applying herbs or chemicals, burning the affected area or resorting to other unproven traditional remedies. The nursing team emphasised that such practices can cause additional injury and precious time may be lost before appropriate treatment begins.
Medical Superintendent Prashant Kumar Singh who was also present during the awareness programme and appreciated the efforts of the Department of Emergency Medicine and the nursing staff.
Dr. Agarwal emphasised the importance of taking snakebite cases seriously and ensuring that victims reach an appropriate healthcare facility at the earliest.
The programme also stressed that absence of immediate severe symptoms does not necessarily mean that a snakebite is harmless. Medical evaluation is important because complications may develop after a delay and appropriate treatment should be determined by trained healthcare professionals.
Agarwal said the Nukkad Natak attracted the attention of patients, attendants and visitors at the busy OPD foyer. By taking the message directly to the public through an interactive form of communication, the nursing staff transformed an important medical advisory into an easy-to-understand and memorable awareness message.
