NEP conclave calls for bridging gaps in educational infrastructure in NE

Dimapur, Sep 20 (UNI) The first North East Education Conclave on NEP 2020 at Chumoukedima called for greater support from both state governments and the Centre to bridge the existing gaps in educational infrastructure in implementing the new education policy across the region.
In the two-day conclave, which concluded on Saturday evening, academicians and policymakers from the Northeast deliberated on various aspects of the policy to create a roadmap and strategies for its successful implementation in the region.
It was agreed that establishing a dedicated forum of education ministers of the Northeast would be an important step toward driving educational transformation in the region.
Noting that the Northeast faces challenges in the education sector specific to the region, the conclave called for closer collaboration among the states to bring about systemic improvement and a shift in approach from merely tracking programme coverage to ensuring verified learning outcomes.
The resolutions adopted at the conclave for infrastructure development, teachers’ recruitment, training of teachers and other necessities for improvement in school education, higher education and technical education for successful implementation of the NEP 2020 in the region would be sent to the central government for necessary action.
The conclave, held on the theme ‘Implementation of NEP 2020: Vision, Challenges and Opportunities for the North Eastern States’, saw participation from seven northeastern states, including education ministers and academics.
Addressing the valedictory function as the chief guest, Tripura higher education minister Kishor Barman said the conclave marked not an ending but the beginning of a new chapter for education in the Northeast. Barman said implementation of the education policy remained the single most important word in the discussion.
He said a policy's success is measured only by the change it brings to a student in even the most remote village.
Education, he said, should not be confined to producing degree holders for employment but must nurture problem solvers, innovators, entrepreneurs and responsible citizens, in keeping with the objectives outlined in the conclave's own documentation.
Elaborating on the transformative potential of the NEP 2020 for higher education and youth development in the northeastern states, Anandrao V Patel, additional secretary, union education ministry, called for establishing common standards and strengthening mechanisms for academic interaction among young people of the region.
He said improved coordination among institutions would help students exchange ideas, access academic resources and benefit from opportunities available across the region.
He called upon the states to facilitate stronger linkages among universities, colleges, research institutions and students so that the youth of the region could participate fully in the emerging national education ecosystem.
Patel said the region has much to offer the rest of the country and can serve as an important centre for learning, cultural exchange and knowledge development.
He added that the Centre would extend all possible support for the success of the NEP 2020 in the region. UNI BHG SAS
