Nihar Kanti Chakma apologises over earlier Tlabung remarks

Aizawl, Sept 20 (UNI) Former Congress MLA Nihar Kanti Chakma has apologised for his earlier remarks describing Tlabung as the “homeland” of the Chakma people and claiming that the area had been part of the Chittagong Hill Tracts before coming under British administration.
Chakma said on Saturday that the remarks were the result of an error he made while experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) on his phone. He said the statement he had written contained serious errors, including his reference to Tlabung as the Chakma homeland and his claim about its historical association with the Chittagong Hill Tracts before the British brought the area under their administration.
He said he had already apologised after the Tlabung branch of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) asked him to do so, following which the situation had calmed down.

However, Chakma said the All India Chakma Students’ union subsequently issued a statement based on his earlier remarks, although he had no knowledge of or involvement in the statement.

He said Tlabung Welfare, Aizawl, had invited him to a press conference and requested him to publicly clarify and apologise for the remarks. Following the request made on September 10, he held a press conference at the Aizawl Press Club on Saturday.

Chakma said he took responsibility for the controversy as it had arisen from his own statement. He expressed hope that his apology would be accepted by the Tlabung community and Tlabung Welfare. UNI ZS
