Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar takes VRS, appointed Chief Information Commissioner

Patna, Sep 27 (UNI) Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar has taken voluntary retirement from the Indian Police Service (IPS) ahead of his scheduled retirement in December 2026.
The state government has approved his Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) with immediate effect and appointed him as the Chief Information Commissioner of Bihar.
According to a notification issued by the state Home Department, the 1991-batch IPS officer applied for VRS on September 25. The government waived the mandatory three-month notice period and accepted his request with immediate effect. Kumar's tenure as DGP was scheduled to end in December 2026.
A separate notification issued by the General Administration Department states that Kumar has been appointed Chief Information Commissioner of Bihar from the date he assumes charge.
Kumar had been on leave since mid-September. During his absence, senior IPS officer Preeta Varma was given additional charge as acting DGP of Bihar.
The development has also made the process of appointing Bihar's next regular DGP more significant. The state government is in the process of sending the names of senior IPS officers to the Centre, after which the selection will proceed through the union Public Service Commission (UPSC) process.
