Bihar: Gandak recedes but remains above danger mark in Saran, Vaishali

Patna, Oct 2 (UNI) The water level of the swollen Gandak river has receded significantly from its peak at Rewaghat in Saran and Lalganj in Vaishali, but it continues to flow above the danger mark, prompting authorities to maintain round-the-clock vigil even as pressure on the embankments has eased.
Official sources said here today that the river level at Rewaghat has fallen by 71 cm from its highest level, while at Lalganj it has declined by 32 cm. Despite the fall, the water remains 0.56 metre and 2 metres above the danger mark, respectively.
The pressure on both embankments has reduced to some extent, with a corresponding decline in critical seepage and piping. However, officials said continuous monitoring would continue until the situation returns to normal.
Adequate stocks of construction material have been placed at breach sites along the embankments. Work is underway to protect the cut-end sections and carry out tagging to prevent further erosion and damage.
Floodwaters released through damaged embankments in Panapur and Maker blocks of Saran district are flowing through Panapur, Karchhaulia, Amnour, Jagdishpur, Maker and Parsa before moving towards Hardiya Chaur in Dariyapur block, where the excess water is expected to accumulate.
From Hardiya Chaur, the additional water will drain into the Ganga through the Mughal Canal, while water will also flow into the Gandak through the Neura and Kakra drains.
Officials have estimated the potential additional inundation area at 22,617 hectares.
Authorities are closely monitoring the river level, embankments and the movement of floodwaters, with preventive measures being undertaken at vulnerable locations to contain further spread of inundation.
