Bihar govt on alert as river levels rise, CM says next 48 hours crucial

Patna, Oct 1 (UNI) With several parts of Bihar reeling under floods, the next 48 hours are being described as critical as water levels in major rivers continue to rise. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Thursday said the state government was fully alert and keeping a close watch on the situation.
Choudhary said special monitoring had been ordered for the next 48 hours, with the government keeping a constant watch on the flood situation and the safety of embankments. He said all necessary measures were being taken and assistance had also been sought from the Air Force for relief and rescue operations.
The Chief Minister visited J.P. Ganga Path in Patna to inspect the rising water level of the Ganga and issued necessary directions to officials during the visit. He directed officials to ensure that people did not face any inconvenience, with their safety given the utmost priority, and called for continuous monitoring of the situation.
According to a statement issued by the Water Resources Department (WRD) on Thursday, the water level of the Gandak has started receding but remains above its previous highest flood level. The department said hydraulic pressure in the river was expected to persist for the next 48 hours.
The WRD said other vulnerable locations were currently safe and under control.
This year, the Ganga, Gandak and Sone rivers have recorded unprecedented water levels, despite Bihar receiving 32 per cent less rainfall than normal, according to the statement.
Several districts of Bihar have been affected by the floods, including West Champaran, East Champaran, Saran, Gopalganj and Saharsa. The Gandak has been particularly dangerous, with the river continuing to breach embankments at several locations.
