BJD condemns police action against Journalists covering Puri Rath Yatra

Bhubaneswar, June 27 (UNI) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today strongly condemned the alleged assault on journalists by police personnel during the Rath Yatra celebrations in Puri.
The journalists were officially invited by the state government to cover the Car festival.
Addressing a press conference, BJD Coordinator and Spokesperson Dr. Lenin Mohanty stated that the Department of Information and Public Relations had arranged a special bus to transport accredited working journalists from Jaydev Bhavan in Bhubaneswar to Puri.
Despite carrying official cordon passes and identity cards, the journalists were reportedly denied access and prevented from carrying out their professional duties upon reaching Puri.
"Instead of cooperating, the police misbehaved with and physically assaulted several senior journalists. Some were injured in the incident," Dr. Mohanty alleged.
He further informed that a woman journalist, Bijayita Tripathy, sustained a serious injury and was admitted to a hospital. Several other journalists were also injured and unable to continue their coverage of the event.
Dr. Mohanty added that the Information and Public Relations Department makes special arrangements every year to facilitate media coverage of the Rath Yatra.
However, this year, due to the inefficiency of the state administration, the media faced obstruction and violence at the hands of the police in the holy town of Puri.
The BJD Mohanty said strongly condemned what it termed as inhuman behavior by the police against the fourth pillar of democracy and demanded immediate intervention by the Chief Minister to take strict action against the responsible police personnel.
