BJP councillor R Sreelekha courts controversy with remarks against Rahul Gandhi

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 15 (UNI) BJP leader and Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councillor R Sreelekha has courted controversy with her remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, prompting Youth Congress and Congress leaders to lodge complaints seeking action against her.
The controversy followed comments made by Sreelekha, a former Kerala Director General of Police, while addressing a BJP protest meeting organised by the party’s Kollam East district committee at Punalur against the opposition’s agitation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Her remarks included a disparaging comparison of Gandhi’s participation in the protest to behaviour under the influence of drugs. She also referred to ‘Thandavam’, associated with Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance, while criticising the opposition demonstration.
Youth Congress state vice-president Vishnu Sunil Pandalam lodged a complaint with the State Police Chief, alleging that the remarks were objectionable and hurt religious sentiments. Congress leader K.S. Sabarinathan also approached the Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner, seeking action against Sreelekha.
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala condemned the remarks, saying political differences could be expressed through democratic criticism but personal insinuations against Gandhi were unacceptable. He called on Sreelekha to withdraw her remarks and apologise.
The incident has added to the political tensions surrounding the opposition’s protests against the electoral roll revision.
