BJP rallies in Kolkata demanding Kharge’s apology over Modi remarks

Kolkata, Oct 26 (UNI) Thousands of BJP workers, led by senior party leader and West Bengal Commerce and Industries Minister Tapas Roy, took out a rally in Kolkata on Monday, protesting against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanding an unconditional apology.
Roy accused Kharge of hurting the sentiments of 140 crore Indians and said the Congress president should apologise for his remarks.
The rally began at Victoria House in the Esplanade area and covered a distance of around one kilometre. BJP workers raised slogans against Kharge, condemning what they described as an attack on the Prime Minister’s dignity.
Kharge, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, triggered a political controversy on Sunday while addressing a meeting in Patna with his remark, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega”, responding to a person in the crowd who reportedly said that the Prime Minister would not go anywhere.
The incident occurred while Kharge was addressing a programme marking the 139 birth anniversary of Shrikrishna Singh, Bihar’s first chief minister.
Roy said the remarks reflected the “taste and culture” of those associated with the Congress. He alleged that neither Kharge nor any other Congress leader had expressed regret over the comments, claiming that the Opposition party was frustrated as India continued to progress under Modi’s leadership.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya also criticised Kharge, accusing him of crossing the boundaries of political decency by dragging the Prime Minister’s late father into a political attack.
Bhattacharya said voters had previously rejected the Congress’ politics of personal attacks through elections and urged its leaders to remember that history.
Questioning whether repeated electoral defeats had driven the Congress leadership to frustration, he asked if Kharge needed counselling.
Bhattacharya also invoked the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, questioning the direction taken by the Congress.
“Criticise Modi’s work, but not by disrespecting his family,” he said, adding that in a democracy, the final word belonged not to political leaders but to the people.
