BJP's Samik Bhattacharya credits Syama Prasad Mookerjee with securing ‘homeland’ for Bengali Hindus

Kolkata, Oct 31 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya on Saturday credited Syama Prasad Mookerjee with ensuring the creation of West Bengal as a separate province for Bengali Hindus during Partition, saying the BJP ideologue’s role had been “forgotten” and remained central to the state’s history.
Speaking at a programme at Webel Bhavan in Salt Lake Sector V, where a bust of Mookerjee has been installed, Bhattacharya said his intervention during the Partition debate enabled people in the state to identify themselves as Indians.
“Today, the fact that we are standing here and speaking and are able to identify ourselves as Indians — if anyone deserves credit for this, it is Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee,” he said.
Bhattacharya referred to the political debate preceding Partition and said Mookerjee and N.C. Chatterjee had maintained that a separate homeland for Bengali Hindus was essential.
“Whether it is Pakistan or no Pakistan, that is immaterial. But for the sake of the Bengali Hindus, one separate homeland is mandatory,” he quoted them as saying.
He claimed that eminent personalities, including historians Ramesh Chandra Majumdar and Jadunath Sarkar, had backed the demand and that Hindu Congress legislators in the then provincial legislature had voted in favour of the creation of West Bengal.
The BJP leader also attacked the Communist Party, alleging that it had at different points supported the division of India and the inclusion of Bengal in Pakistan.
“History can never be imprisoned,” Bhattacharya said, arguing that attempts to suppress historical events could not prevent their eventual recurrence.
He said Mookerjee’s political legacy was also rooted in the principle that citizens had duties alongside rights. “It is not merely a matter of ordinary struggle, nor is it merely a matter of rights. Ours is a country of duties. If everyone performs their own duty, then the rights created will be protected,” Bhattacharya said.
