BJP sought scrutiny, not deletion of voters: Karnataka MLA

Belagavi, Oct 2 (UNI) BJP leaders in Belagavi on Friday denied allegations of violating electoral rules by filing bulk objections during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying they had sought scrutiny, not deletion, of voters and alleging that Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas had been illegally included in the electoral rolls at the instance of local Congress leaders.
Belagavi South MLA and BJP leader Abhay Patil said the party had not targeted any particular community and that its booth-level agents had flagged voters suspected to be dead, shifted, absent, duplicate or otherwise ineligible.
“We believe that we have not violated any rule. However, if during scrutiny of our applications, officials conclude that we have made any mistake, let them reject our applications,” Patil told reporters here.
He said BJP workers had identified suspected voters during ground-level verification and conveyed the details to the party's Booth Level Agents (BLAs), who submitted objections to the electoral authorities.
“Congress leaders are accusing us of targeting Muslim voters. That is false. We have not targeted anyone. Our workers have objected to the inclusion of dead, shifted, absent, duplicate and other suspect voters,” he said.
Patil alleged that a large number of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas had been illegally included in the electoral rolls in Belagavi at the instance of local Congress leaders.
“We demand that such ineligible electors be weeded out. We are compiling a list of such voters in the district. We will release it soon,” he said.
Responding to allegations by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar that BJP cadre had submitted bulk Form-7 objections, Patil said the applications had been signed by BLAs, while party workers may have carried them to the Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
“Congress leaders are saying that we have crossed the upper limit for filing objections per day. If that is so, let the officers scrutinise only those numbers that are valid and reject the rest. In any case, we have only sought scrutiny, and not deletion,” he said.
Patil also denied allegations that BJP workers had forged signatures on Form-7 applications and rejected the Chief Minister's claim that he had admitted his mistake before SIR officials.
Former BJP MLA Anil Benake also defended the objections filed in Belagavi North constituency, saying they were based on ground surveys and not on access to any Election Commission database.
He alleged that Congress workers had threatened BJP workers and BLAs and claimed some Form-7 applications were forcibly taken away and handed over to the Chief Minister.
Benake also rejected allegations that BJP workers had impersonated an electoral registration officer, calling the cases registered against party workers an attempt to harass them.
He further alleged that more than 80 per cent of BLOs in Belagavi North were from the Muslim community and claimed the BJP had raised the issue with District Election Officer Mohammad Roshan without getting a response.
