BJP women leaders request President to dismiss Congress’ sacked JNU MP from LS

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) A day after BJP staged an agitation outside the Congress headquarters over alleged sexual harassment that led to the dismissal of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from Jawaharlal Nehru University, a delegation of party's women lawmakers on Tuesday called on President Droupadi Murmu to seek his dismissal from the Lok Sabha.
“We urged President Murmu to ensure safety of alleged sexual harassment victims at JNU,” BJP mahila morcha chief Roopkumara Choudhary said, also questioning Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi on their “silence” on the issue. According to the BJP leader, the President has given them an assurance that “she would have the matter investigated and ensure appropriate action at her level."
“Professor Bimol Akoijam, who is also a Congress MP from Manipur, allegedly misbehaved with 11 young women at the university. The women had submitted a written complaint, following which an internal committee was constituted to investigate the matter. The committee reportedly found him guilty, and he was dismissed from his position at the university. However, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have not uttered a word on the issue, despite claiming to stand for women's rights,” she said
“Today, those young women are frightened and apprehensive because Dr Bimol is an influential Congress leader and enjoys the party's full support. The complainants are also afraid. We therefore approached the President of India to request that, since he continues to be a Lok Sabha MP, he should also be removed from Parliament. We also sought full protection for the young women who showed great courage in coming forward and filing the complaint, ensuring that they do not face any harm or intimidation in the future,” she added.
The JNU last week dismissed the Manipur MP due to complaints of sexual misconduct against him, which he has denied.
“I have seen how people treat us in the northeast. I keep asking, would they do this had it been a powerful minister, an MP or MLA from the so-called mainstream. They said that I have asked for sex for marks. Is it even in their leaked allegations? It is not there. This is a complete mockery of a system that is established in order to protect and do gender justice,” he was quoted as saying.
According to the university, the action was taken after its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) found him guilty of sexual misconduct following complaints filed by 11 female students. The Delhi Police has booked the Congress MP on charges of sexual harassment. However, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) has criticized the termination, calling the decision “hasty”.
The BJP is demanding that the Congress take serious action and is specifically targeting Rahul Gandhi “for shielding the lawmaker”. According to BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Geeta Shakya, “on one hand, they say they stand with the girls, but on the other, whether it’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra , Sonia Gandhi, or Rahul Gandhi, no one is seeing how these girls were harassed. Rahul Gandhi should demand the resignation of that MP and dismiss him”.UNI VS AAB
