BSP to observe party founder Kanshi Ram's 20th death anniversary to rejuvenate party

Lucknow, Oct 8 (UNI) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has called for a show of strength in Lucknow tomorrow to mark the 20th death anniversary of party founder Kanshi Ram.

The rally comes as the party prepares a do-or-die campaign for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in a bid to regain its lost political footprint.

Recently, Mayawati put an end to the controversy surrounding the expulsion of her nephew Akash Anand by reinstating him as a national coordinator to boost tomorrow's programme at the Kanshi Ram memorial.

Party leaders and workers from across the state have been directed to assemble at the Kanshi Ram memorial in Lucknow to pay their obeisance to the Dalit icon.

Mayawati too is likely to address the gathering to give a message to the cadre and her supporters tomorrow.

The BSP also has no representation in the UP assembly or legislative council, Lok Sabha and the term of the sole member in the Rajya Sabha will end next month. The party's vote share has gone down from 30.43 per cent in the 2007 assembly polls to 9.39 per cent in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Compounding the crisis is the looming threat of losing its status as a recognised national party.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) mandates that a national party must secure at least 6 per cent of valid votes in four or more states alongside four MPs, or win 2% of Lok Sabha seats across three states.
Following the 2024 defeat, the BSP falls short of these benchmarks and awaits the ECT's official review.
