J&K: Assembly set for stormy Monday over statehood resolution

Srinagar, Sep 27 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is set for a potentially heated sitting on Monday as the House takes up for discussion the resolution seeking the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to the union Territory.
The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday, had triggered sharp exchanges between the ruling National Conference and the BJP. The controversy centres on its reference to resolutions adopted by the Assembly in 2000 and 2024.
The official list of Business for Monday places the Chief Minister’s resolution at item four, specifically providing for its discussion in the House.
“Discussion on the Resolution moved by the Hon'ble Chief Minister on 25th of September, 2026 in the House,” the list of business for Monday read.
The BJP had objected strongly to the reference to the 2000 autonomy resolution when Omar introduced the statehood resolution on Friday. BJP legislators entered the well of the House, raised slogans and tore copies of the resolution, prompting counter-slogans from National Conference members.
On Sunday, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma claimed that his party was the only one committed to the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, while accusing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of sabotaging the process for its restoration.
“‎What was the need for the pre-1953 position, which they brought through a resolution in 2000 and was thrown in dustbin?” Sharma asked. “ They (NC) does not want to bring the statehood.”
Sharma on Friday had maintained that the BJP is prepared to participate in a debate on restoration of statehood but will oppose any attempt to bring the issues of autonomy or Article 370 into the discussion.
The political temperature rose further after Sharma met union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Saturday. Meanwhile, the PDP has sought an amendment to the resolution on statehood and add restoration of Article 370 and 35A to the resolution tabled by Omar on Friday.
Monday’s agenda, however, extends beyond the contentious resolution. CM Omar Abdullah is scheduled to introduce the Jammu and Kashmir Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026, aimed at replacing permission-based controls with rule-based governance and facilitating investment and employment.
The House will also take up a substantial list of private members’ bills, including proposals concerning online gaming and fantasy leagues, women’s health and reproductive well-being, employment, reservation, disaster relief, tobacco prohibition and regulation of government employees.
