Carney and Macron to meet in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon on Sunday

Ottawa, Sep 20 (UNI) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday in the French territory of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, in a symbolic show of unity and close ties between Canada and France.
The leaders will hold a working lunch and attend a wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial honouring volunteers of Free France, according to the two governments.
Macron is spending the weekend on the archipelago from Sept. 19 to 21 , located about 20 km (12 miles) off the southern coast of Newfoundland, before travelling to New York for the United Nations General Assembly next week.
Carney is also due to travel to New York on Monday. Macron's office said Carney will be the first Canadian prime minister to make an official visit to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Macron is the first French president to visit the territory in more than a decade.
The meeting comes as Canada and the European union seek to deepen their cooperation amid strained relations with the United States under President Donald Trump.
During the visit, Carney and Macron are expected to discuss cooperation in areas including aerospace, energy and critical minerals, the Canadian prime minister’s office said.
Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon is a French overseas territory and one of the closest European territories to Canada. Its location off Newfoundland gives the islands particular geographic significance in Canada's relationship with France.
The meeting is intended to underscore the longstanding ties between the two countries as Canada and the European union work towards a broader partnership.
For Carney, the visit comes days after he addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg, as Canada seeks to deepen its economic and political ties with Europe.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that she wanted Canada to become the European Union's first “associate member”. In a speech to the European Parliament, she called for the two sides to “urgently reimagine” their partnership and move beyond their existing free-trade agreement.
Carney welcomed the proposal during his address to the European Parliament on Thursday. He said the details and name of any new arrangement had yet to be determined but that the proposal would be debated and put to a vote in Canada's Parliament.UNI AAB
