Carrying inflammables on trains may invite 3-yr jail term: ECoR

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) Passengers carrying firecrackers, petrol, kerosene, gas cylinders and other inflammable materials on trains could face up to three years in jail, as the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has launched a 15-day safety drive ahead of Diwali to prevent fire incidents.
The drive, being conducted from November 4 to 18, will involve surprise checks of passenger luggage and parcels across its three divisions.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP), in coordination with railway officials, will conduct random checks of luggage and parcels before they are loaded onto trains. Carrying prohibited inflammable or dangerous materials is a punishable offence under the Railways Act, 1989.
The drive covers Khurda Road, Sambalpur and Rayagada divisions, with officers and supervisors of all departments tasked with identifying potential fire hazards and ensuring the availability and proper functioning of firefighting equipment.
Inspections will be carried out at stations and in coaches, pantry cars, power cars and locomotives to check fire extinguishers and smoke and fire detection systems. Electrical wiring in coaches and pantry cars will also be examined to identify loose connections and other potential hazards.
Railway authorities will ensure that passages, vestibules and coach doors remain free from obstructions and 'No Smoking' signs are prominently displayed. Pantry car staff and contractual workers will be sensitised to fire prevention and the proper use of firefighting equipment.
Passengers will also be cautioned against using mobile phone and laptop charging points to operate heaters or other electrical appliances. Fire safety boards, stickers, and awareness pamphlets will be displayed and distributed at stations and trains.
Station staff, gatemen and running staff have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance and promptly report any signs of fire in passing trains. Passengers have been urged to report suspicious luggage or safety violations to railway staff or through helpline number 139.
