Centre approves Rs 93.94 crore Maharaja Ajj Sarovar project in Mohali: MP Kartikeya Sharma

New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) The union Tourism Ministry has approved a Rs 93.94 crore project to redevelop Maharaja Ajj Sarovar at Kharar in Punjab’s Mohali district under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma said on Thursday.
Sharma said union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had communicated the approval to him through an official letter.
The proposed development includes a Ramayana Interpretation Centre, a statue of Lord Ram, redevelopment of the ghats, an entrance gate, an open-air theatre and amenities for pilgrims and tourists.
The project aims to preserve the site’s religious and cultural character while strengthening visitor facilities.
Sharma had written to the union minister seeking early approval of the detailed project report prepared by the Punjab government and financial assistance for its implementation.
He took up the matter following a request from Shashipal Jain, chairman of the Shri Ram Mandir Maharaja Ajj Sarovar Development Committee, for support for the site’s comprehensive development.
Welcoming the approval, Sharma said preserving historical and religious sites was important to safeguarding the country’s cultural heritage.
“Taking issues connected to public sentiment to the Central Government and working for their resolution is my duty,” he said.
“My resolve is that our cultural heritage must be preserved and the benefits of development must reach the common people.”
Sharma thanked Shekhawat for approving the project and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership with promoting India’s religious and cultural heritage.
“The development of Maharaja Ajj Sarovar will establish this region as a significant centre of religious tourism in the times to come,” he said.
