New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) union Home Minister Amit Shah, in the presence of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Sandhu, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Water Minister Parvesh Verma, on Thursday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 43 water and sewerage projects worth Rs 8,941.22 crore.
Shah, expressing confidence, assured the people of the national capital that the BJP government is working in coordination with neighboring state governments, and the party leaders will come to seek peoples’ blessings in 2029, with a clean Yamuna.
HM stated that as soon as the BJP government was formed in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had placed before the Rekha Gupta government a plan of action to make the Yamuna pollution-free. So far, 40 per cent of the work under this plan has been completed, he said.
Hitting out at the previous governments, Shah said that for the past 30 years, previous regimes allowed Delhi’s sewage water to be discharged into the Yamuna and dumped 2,000 tonnes of cow dung from dairies into the river every year.
He appreciated efforts being undertaken on a priority basis in a short time span by the Delhi government led by CM Gupta, and work done by the water board led by minister Parvesh Verma. He said that soon PM Modi’s vision of a clean Yamuna will be fulfilled by the combined efforts of the neighboring state governments, and the Centre.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Gupta said the Delhi government is moving ahead with a very scientific roadmap towards making Yamuna clean, and improving Delhi’s sewer network so that untreated sewage does not go into the river and pollute it anymore.

Be it the DSTPs, improving drain infrastructure, connecting households with sewer network, the government is taking all the necessary steps that had been pending, she said.

Gupta thanked Shah for the continuous cooperation and guidance in Delhi's development, and also extended heartfelt birthday greetings and best wishes to HM on behalf of the entire national capital.

The total projects of the water board include the inauguration of 10 projects and laying of foundation stones for 33, aimed to accelerate work on developing water treatment plants, upgrading sewage treatment plants, setting up new decentralised sewage treatment plants, expanding the sewer network, along with improving drainage infrastructure.
The aim behind most of the projects is that the sewage that reaches the Yamuna at present will be caught, treated and reused instead.
Ten projects worth Rs 2,827.11 crore were dedicated to the people, and foundation stones were laid for 33 projects worth Rs 6,114.11 crore.
“The STPs and decentralised STPs (DSTPs) that Delhi needed were never short of announcements. Under the previous government, tenders were floated, cancelled and floated again. Files kept moving, but the work never started and only excuses were given to the public. The only thing missing was the work itself," said Water Minister Parvesh Verma on the occasion.
"Delhi got promises and advertisements. The Yamuna got sewage. That ends now," Verma added.
Sewage from the Barapullah and Maharani Bagh drains, which used to flow straight into the Yamuna, is now being intercepted and sent to the Okhla STP through a new 35 MGD pumping station at Batla House, Verma informed.
Eight existing STPs will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 1,041 crore, raising their capacity from 78.2 MGD to 140.8 MGD, almost double, benefiting about 78.5 lakh people, he added.
The Rs 1,161-crore, 124 MGD Okhla STP project and upgrades at Rithala and Kondli are part of the projects unveiled on Thursday.
A total of 29 decentralised STPs and sewage pumping stations worth Rs 3,113.67 crore will serve 358 unauthorised colonies and 113 villages, home to about 36.29 lakh people, in Narela, Bawana, Kanjhawala, Bijwasan, Tikri Kalan and nearby areas.
Verma said that for families in unauthorised colonies and villages, the development means no open drain outside the front door, no overflowing septic tanks, and cleaner lanes for children to play in.
