Centre launches six-month bridge course for B.Ed primary teachers

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi, on Thursday, launched a six-month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) for in-service primary school teachers holding B.Ed degrees, providing them a pathway to obtain the certification required to teach Classes I to V.
The course, launched in New Delhi, will be implemented through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and is aimed at strengthening the pedagogical skills and competencies of teachers working at the foundational and primary stages.
Designed in accordance with the framework of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the programme will focus on child-centred, inclusive and developmentally appropriate teaching practices. It will combine academic learning with at least 10 days of online contact classes and a minimum of 20 days of school-based experience.
The programme comprises six theory courses along with a school-based practicum intended to bridge the gap between educational theory and classroom practice. The practical component will include practice teaching, reflective journals and portfolios, besides video tutorials, e-learning material and digital learning platforms.
According to the Education Ministry, the course is intended to help teachers respond to the diverse learning needs of young children and develop the skills, attitudes and reflective capacities required for quality education and lifelong learning.
The course will be offered through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, enabling in-service teachers to undertake the programme while continuing their professional responsibilities.
The medium of instruction will be Hindi and English, while teachers will have the option of writing the public examination in any of the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
The initiative follows the Supreme Court's April 8, 2024 judgment in Devesh Sharma vs union of India and Others in Civil Appeal No. 5068 of 2023, which empowered the NCTE to devise a bridge course for appointees serving as primary teachers who did not possess a D.El.Ed qualification.
The bridge course has accordingly been designed for in-service primary school teachers with B.Ed degrees who were appointed between June 28, 2018 and August 11, 2023 to teach Classes I to V. It applies to teachers whose appointments are protected under the NCTE Gazette Notification dated June 28, 2018.
Admission to the programme will be conducted online through the NIOS bridge course portal. Eligible teachers will be able to register, upload documents and track their admission status through the designated dashboard.
The course material, including self-learning material, will be provided digitally, with teachers also receiving access to supplementary audio-visual and interactive resources.
