Centre urges Karnataka to fast-track power sector reforms

Bengaluru, May 23 (UNI) Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Friday called upon the Karnataka Government to implement financial reforms in the power sector, expedite the rollout of smart meters, and resolve transmission infrastructure challenges at the earliest.
Addressing a high-level review meeting on Karnataka’s power sector here, Manohar Lal was joined by Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Naik, Karnataka Energy Minister KJ George, and senior officials from both the Centre and the State, along with representatives from REC Ltd.
The State Government made a detailed presentation on issues related to generation mix, distribution capacity, and Right of Way (RoW) constraints hampering transmission projects. The Union Minister appreciated Karnataka’s progress in integrating renewable energy into its grid and said his visit was aimed at understanding local challenges and bolstering the state’s power systems.
He emphasised the need to curb annual financial losses in the state’s electricity distribution companies and called for the adoption of cost-reflective tariffs. The Minister stressed timely clearance of pending dues and subsidies, particularly from government departments.
Manohar Lal directed the State to ensure 100% saturation of prepaid smart meters in all government offices, urban local bodies, and housing colonies by August 2025. He also recommended implementing a centralised payment mechanism for more effective electricity billing and dues management.
The Minister urged time-bound rollout of smart meters across commercial, industrial, and other consumer segments. On the transmission front, he called for urgent resolution of RoW issues and advised the State to adopt the compensation framework notified by the Government of India.
He reaffirmed the Centre’s full support for the development of Karnataka’s power sector and reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted, sustainable power for the people of the State.
