Chacarra battles broken toe, late Hillier charge to clinch third DP World Tour title

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra battled a broken toe and a late challenge from New Zealand's Daniel Hillier to clinch the DP World India Championship here on Sunday, securing his third title of the 2026 DP World Tour season and moving to the top of the Race to Dubai Rankings.
Chacarra endured a gruelling final day at the Delhi Golf Club, playing 25 holes at the US$ 4 million tournament before lifting the Lotus Trophy after finishing with a 21-under-par total of 267.
The Spaniard displayed remarkable resilience despite carrying the toe injury into the tournament. He began the day by completing the seven remaining holes of his third round in five-under, combining three birdies with a closing eagle to build a five-shot advantage heading into the final round.
With the third round completed only shortly before the final round began, Chacarra faced a demanding test of endurance and concentration. His four-round scores of 67, 67, 63 and 70 proved enough to secure the title, just one shot short of Tommy Fleetwood's aggregate record from the 2025 edition.
Chacarra's victory was built on sustained scoring consistency, with 24 birdies and an eagle against just five bogeys over the four rounds.
However, the contest was far from settled as Hillier launched a spirited charge on the back nine. The New Zealander cut Chacarra's lead from six shots to two, piling pressure on the leader and threatening to turn the championship into a close finish.
Chacarra held his nerve through the closing stages to finish two shots clear of Hillier, who carded a final-round 67 to finish runner-up at 19-under-par.
The victory also propelled Chacarra to the top of the Race to Dubai Rankings, underlining the significance of a season in which he has emerged as one of the DP World Tour's leading performers.
Lahiri leads Indian challenge
India's Anirban Lahiri finished as the best-placed home golfer, tying for 23rd at eight-under-par 280 after rounds of 70, 73, 69 and 68.
Lahiri closed with a bogey-free performance on Sunday, although he admitted that his overall showing had not matched his expectations.
“I played reasonably well overall, although I hit more loose shots than I would have liked. Playing 20 holes bogey-free today, in six-under, makes me feel better,” he said.
“But it still wasn't the performance I'd hoped for, and I know I can do much better,” he added.
Talwar secures DP World Tour card
Indian golfer Saptak Talwar had a major achievement of his own, clinching the 2026 DP World PGTI Order of Merit title despite finishing tied 55th at one-under-par 287 in the championship.
Talwar's season earnings reached Rs 1.02 crore, sealing his place on the DP World Tour from the start of the new season in late November.
Reflecting on his progress, Talwar credited a consistent year and the experience of competing on both the DP World PGTI and HotelPlanner Tour for his development.
“This is the culmination of a lot of good work throughout the year. I’m very happy my family could be here to share it, especially at a course that means a lot to me,” he said.
Yuvraj Sandhu finished tied 34th at five-under-par 283, while Om Prakash Chouhan secured a tied-42nd finish at four-under-par 284.
The championship, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and DP World PGTI, offered a compelling finish, with Chacarra's injury-defying triumph headlining the international field and Talwar's season-long achievement providing a significant boost for Indian golf.
