Chouhan spearheads Indian challenge as Chacarra takes control of DP World India Championship

New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) India’s Om Prakash Chouhan endured a gruelling 34-hole day to emerge as the best-placed home golfer in tied 30th position, while Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra strengthened his grip on the USD 4 million DP World India Championship at the Delhi Golf Club here on Saturday.
Chouhan carded rounds of 68, 72 and 71 to reach five-under 211, displaying considerable resilience despite the physical demands of completing his delayed second round and playing most of his third round on the same day.
Chacarra, meanwhile, moved to 14-under overall after going four-under through 11 holes of his third round to establish a two-shot lead. However, fading light forced the suspension of play at 1744 hours, leaving several players with holes to complete when the tournament resumes.
The championship, jointly sanctioned by the DP World Tour and DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (DP World PGTI), has been disrupted by persistent weather-related delays. Nearly five hours of playing time were lost to rain on Wednesday, pushing the completion of the second round into Saturday.
Of the 77 players who made the halfway cut at even-par 144, only 26 completed their third rounds before play was suspended.
For Chouhan, the day was as much a test of endurance as of golfing ability. The 12-time winner, who earned his DP World Tour opportunity after topping the DP World PGTI Order of Merit in 2023, had completed only two holes of his second round on Friday before play was halted.
He returned on Saturday to finish the round with a 72 before following it up with a composed 71. His second-round card featured four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey, while the third round included two birdies and a bogey, supplemented by crucial par-saves.
“My body was feeling very tight after playing 36 holes, but I stayed focused on my game. It was a steady round,” Chouhan said.
The Delhi Golf Club's familiar layout offered him some assistance through a demanding schedule.
“I’ve played here many times, so I know how to plan my way around the course and where to position the ball. That experience has helped me,” he said.
Currently seventh in the DP World PGTI Order of Merit, Chouhan said he was concentrating on his own performance rather than the distinction of being the leading Indian.
“I’m not thinking too much about being the leading Indian. I’m concentrating on my own game,” he said.
He also credited his recovery routine for helping him remain focused through the long day, saying he visited the training room after completing his second round.
“I haven’t allowed myself to get distracted. I have one target: to focus on my game, my tee shots and my second shots,” he added.
Yuvraj Sandhu produced the most dramatic Indian fightback of the day to secure his place in the weekend rounds. Three-over through his first seven holes of the second round, Sandhu caught fire on the back nine, striking seven birdies between the ninth and 18th holes, including four in his final five holes.
His second-round 68 lifted him to one-under 143 and safely inside the cut. Sandhu was even-par through five holes of his third round and tied 60th at level par for the tournament through 50 holes.
DP World PGTI Order of Merit leader Saptak Talwar was also tied 60th, having reached even-par through 12 holes of his third round after opening with 71 and 73.
Anirban Lahiri stood tied 48th at one-under for his third round through 16 holes, following opening rounds of 70 and 73.
With the third round incomplete, the leaderboard remains provisional. Chacarra, however, has placed himself in a strong position to contend for the title, while Chouhan will look to build on his steady performance as the Indian challenge enters the decisive stages.
