Cinema becomes a space to explore politics, social realities: Directors at IDSFFK

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 30 (UNI) The politics, social realities and lived experiences explored through documentary and short films came into focus at the final-day ‘Meet the Director’ session of the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) here on Wednesday.
The participating filmmakers discussed the ideas and experiences behind their films, besides sharing their perspectives on subjects ranging from traditional performing arts and academic pressures to climate-induced displacement, sporting culture and community identity.
The session, moderated by Dr Catherine Thomas, featured directors Ameya Gore, Gautam Sonti, Arathi M R, Aswin Asha Pradeep, Biswajit Das, Harshappi Harsh, Srishti Garg, Harish K M, Jeevan Satheesh Paleri, Githin Raj and Adith Krishna K G.
Harish K M said his film The Genesis of Rasa explores the concept of ‘Rasa Nishpatti’ from the Natya Shastra through the traditional performance form of Koodiyattam.
Gautam Sonti spoke about his documentary on the academic environment and psycho-social pressures experienced by seven students at IIT Madras, examining the challenges faced by students within a highly competitive educational setting.
Arathi M R discussed the displacement triggered by climate change and tidal flooding, focusing on the human consequences of environmental changes.
Adith Krishna K G spoke about motocross racing and the need to view it as a sport rather than merely as a form of reckless adventure.
Githin Raj said Restless Rhythms explores the ego clashes between two brothers and issues of community identity that surface during the funeral rituals of their father.
The directors also discussed their filmmaking processes and the social and political contexts that informed their works, providing the audience with an opportunity to engage with the films beyond their narratives.
