Commuters remain affected as bus drivers' strike continues in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) The bus services in the national capital remained affected on Friday as the buses operated by the concessionaires remained off the roads with drivers on strike over various demands, including wage hikes, medical facilities and overtime payments, etc.
Commuters who regularly take buses to work were the ones worst affected, followed by those who are dependent on bus routes for their travel, while Delhi Metro also has witnessed increased passenger footfall since the strike.
According to locals, fewer buses were available, and the situation left them stranded at bus stops for a longer time.
On Thursday, the Delhi Airport had also taken to social media platform X, advising travellers to plan in the wake of the bus strike.
The authorities concerned at the airport stated that due to the ongoing bus strike, connectivity to and from Delhi Airport through the transport medium may be impacted.
Inter-terminal transfers are expected to remain operational through alternate arrangements, the airport authority added.
Drivers working on contract across different routes and depots remained on strike on Friday as well.
Earlier, on Thursday, Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh said that the strike is by the drivers employed by concessionaires, and he had met them as well.
The minister had informed that he had assured them regarding the five or six demands raised by them, which include leaves, medical facilities, compensation for additional kilometres, or employment to a family member in the event of an unfortunate incident, ensuring the drivers that the concessionaires will accept them.
The minister had also said that he would take up the matter regarding their salaries as well following consultation with the labour department.
Meanwhile, the drivers are saying that the government must bring a solution to their issues, so that they do not have to face problems.
The Transport Minister had also appealed to protesting drivers to call off their strike and return to work.
Meanwhile, commuters are facing multiple issues due to the buses not operating, while some said that private transport like cabs, autos, etc are very expensive for them, as not every place is directly accessible through the metro, which is also witnessing increased footfall.
On Thursday, according to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) it recorded the highest ever passenger boarding across its network, which was 8244903.
The DMRC had also made extensive arrangements to manage additional crowds amid the ongoing bus strike in the national capital to ease pressure on the system, and had increased train trips across its network. UNI APS SAS

Centre raises bulk sugar stock limit to 30 days to ensure adequate supplies
