CoMSO against Finance Ministry’s Sunday bank order in Meghalaya

Shillong, Sep 24 (UNI) The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has strongly opposed the decision of the Ministry of Finance to keep public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) open on Sunday, (September 27) in view of the proposed nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30.
In a statement issued on Thursday, CoMSO General Secretary Balkarin Ch Marak urged the authorities to reconsider it, citing the religious and social significance of Sundays in Meghalaya.
Acknowledging the government’s stated concern over maintaining uninterrupted banking services, the CoMSO, however, said administrative convenience should not override the religious and social realities of the state
“Sunday has traditionally been observed as a day of worship, prayer, family fellowship, and rest in Meghalaya,” Marak said, questioning why bank employees are required to work on Sundays without any apparent state-specific consultation
“Meghalaya is not merely a geographical extension of a national administrative framework,” he said, noting that the state has its own distinct social, cultural, and religious character that should be taken into account when implementing policies.
Questioning why alternative arrangements could not be explored instead of making bank employees to work on Sundays, the CoMSO General Secretary suggested the government should have taken measures such as extended banking hours before the strike period, strengthening ATM and digital banking networks, and making limited emergency arrangements to ensure uninterrupted service.
The organisation called upon the Ministry of Finance, the Reserve Bank of India, concerned public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks, and the Meghalaya government to examine the applicability of the decision in the state and make appropriate arrangements that respect Meghalaya’s observance of Sunday.
“The convenience of bank customers should not be prioritised at the expense of the legitimate religious and social sentiments of employees and the wider population,” Marak said.
The CoMSO warned that if the authorities proceeded without addressing its concerns, it would be “compelled to act accordingly in due course of time”.
The organisation also called for sensitivity, consultation and respect rather than what it described as a “one-size-fits-all” administrative approach.
