Cong demands release of tribal students detained in Mumbai

Mumbai, Oct 5 (UNI) Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal has demanded the immediate release of tribal students detained by police after they allegedly entered the party headquarters, Tilak Bhavan, in Mumbai, where they had taken shelter for the night during their long march from Nashik.
According to Sapkal, the students had sought accommodation at Tilak Bhavan for the night.
He alleged that police entered the Congress headquarters during the midnight hours and detained students, including women, and also arrested NSUI president Sagar Salunkhe and the Mumbai NSUI president.
Sapkal alleged that the police action inside the Congress headquarters was unlawful and demanded the immediate release of the detained tribal students and NSUI office-bearers.
He further warned that if the students were not released, Congress leaders from across Maharashtra would come to Mumbai and stage a protest outside Varsha, the official residence of the Maharashtra Chief Minister. UNI SP ATP SAS

Meanwhile, speaking to newsmen at the party head office Tilak Bhawan at Dadar West here today after being released by the police, the Congress-affiliated National Students' union of India (NSUI) Maharashtra president Sagar Salunkhe alleged that the Mumbai police treated tribal students from interior Maharashtra as if they were criminals.

Mumbai, Oct 5 (UNI) Mumbai police released the tribal students and Congress-affiliated National Students union of India (NSUI) leaders on Monday afternoon after Maharashtra State Congress Committee President Harshawardhan Sapkal warned that the Congress will besiege (gherao) 'Varsha' bungalow, which is the official residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, if the tribal students and NSUI leaders picked up by the police are not released immediately.
