Congress accuses Amit Shah of evading questions on ‘vote theft’, Haryana law and order

Chandigarh, Nov 5 (UNI) Congress leaders Sanjay Dutt and Rao Narender Singh on Thursday accused union Home Minister Amit Shah of evading questions on electoral irregularities, women’s safety, farmers’ issues and law and order in Haryana, alleging that his speeches in Karnal and Ambala focused on political attacks rather than addressing public concerns.
In a joint statement, Dutt, AICC in-charge of Haryana, and Singh, president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, said Shah had failed to respond to eight issues raised by the party.
Instead, they alleged, he resorted to personal attacks on Rahul Gandhi, invoked the 1984 anti-Sikh violence and the Bofors controversy, and raised the issue of infiltrators to divert attention from the questions concerning Haryana.
“People of Haryana had sought answers from you, not political speeches. You are the union Home Minister, not a BJP campaigner,” the Congress leaders said.
They sought a point-by-point response to allegations of electoral irregularities in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections, including suspicious voter entries, identical photographs and discrepancies in electoral records, and demanded an independent investigation.
The leaders also questioned the Election Commission’s independence, raising concerns over the 2023 law governing the appointment of election commissioners and the legal protection provided to them under Section 16.
They sought the basis for Shah’s claim regarding three crore infiltrators, demanding official and verified records. While supporting action against illegal immigration, they said no genuine Indian citizen should lose voting rights in the name of electoral roll revision.
On women’s safety, the Congress leaders referred to the May 28, 2023, police action against protesting women wrestlers at Jantar Mantar and questioned the BJP’s response to their demand for justice.
They also raised farmers’ concerns over a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP), crop procurement, timely payments, compensation and rising agricultural costs.
Recalling the 2020-21 farmers’ agitation, they alleged that protesters had faced barricades and other restrictions before the three farm laws were withdrawn.
The statement also flagged alleged incidents of murder, extortion, gang violence and crimes against women and children in Haryana, seeking details of steps taken by the state government to improve law and order.
The Congress leaders questioned Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s administrative accountability, alleging that political engagements and foreign visits could affect governance and the redressal of public grievances.
They said the Congress was expanding its outreach across villages, towns, mandis and chaupals, citing the November 1 ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan as a demonstration of support for protecting democratic rights.
“Evading questions will not make them disappear. The Congress will continue to raise the concerns of Haryana’s people,” the leaders said.
The statement was issued by Sanjay Dutt and Rao Narender Singh.
