Congress Govt has corrected Krishna water injustice: Uttam Kumar Reddy

Miryalguda (Telangana), May 4 (UNI) Telangana Irrigation & Civil Supplies Minister Capt N Uttam Kumar Reddy announced on Sunday that the state government has taken steps to correct the long-standing injustice in Krishna River water allocation and has accelerated irrigation development, particularly in South Telangana.

Speaking at a review meeting in Miryalguda, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II had reopened the allocation issue due to Congress’s persistent efforts—unlike the previous BRS regime, which remained silent on Andhra Pradesh’s illegal expansion of projects like Pothireddypadu. The Congress government, he said, is now installing telemetry systems for transparent monitoring of water usage.

He accused the former KCR-led government of spending Rs 1.81 lakh crore on irrigation without creating meaningful ayacut, while neglecting key southern projects. In contrast, the Congress has allocated Rs 23,000 crore in the 2024–25 budget and is focusing on completing pending irrigation works efficiently and cost-effectively.

He detailed progress on several lift irrigation projects and check dam proposals in the Miryalguda constituency, with timelines and acreages covered. He also directed immediate repairs of the damaged stretch of the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal and urged officials to clear Rs 10.9 crore pending power dues to resume stalled works.

On civil supplies, he highlighted Telangana’s record 280 LMT paddy production in one year and free premium rice distribution to over 3 crore people, claiming it as the largest such initiative in Indian history.

He criticised the previous BRS government for distributing poor-quality rice and wasting public funds.

Uttam Kumar Reddy invited feedback from public representatives and officials to further improve the irrigation and food supply sectors, reaffirming the Congress government's commitment to farmer welfare and regional development, an official statement said. UNI VV SSP
