Congress has no right to question poll institutions: Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad, Sep 27 (UNI) union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy on Sunday criticised the Congress and Rahul Gandhi for questioning Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the Election Commission after electoral defeats, saying the BJP does not “steal votes” but wins the confidence of the people.
Addressing a media conference at the BJP state office, Kishan Reddy said the Congress had praised the Election Commission when it came to power in states such as Telangana, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, but questioned the institution when the BJP won elections. He termed this approach as political double standards. Similar remarks by Kishan Reddy on the Election Commission and EVMs were reported earlier this week.
He also criticised the Congress over its attacks on constitutional institutions and recalled the Emergency imposed in 1975, restrictions on press freedom and the imprisonment of opposition leaders. He accused Rahul Gandhi of questioning several institutions, including the armed forces, judiciary, Election Commission, ED and CBI.
On the electoral roll revision process, Kishan Reddy said correcting voter lists by removing deceased, duplicate and otherwise ineligible entries was part of the constitutional process. He referred to the revision being conducted in West Bengal under the supervision of the Supreme Court and questioned the Congress's objections to the exercise.
Responding to questions on reported differences among Election Commissioners, he said discussions and exchange of letters were normal in a democracy and noted that the three Election Commissioners had met and clarified that there were no differences.
Kishan Reddy also accused the Congress governments in Telangana, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh of facing financial difficulties and said the party should introspect over its electoral performance. These were political claims made by the union Minister; he did not provide independent evidence for all the assertions during the briefing.
He said the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was focused on development and welfare, citing infrastructure, free foodgrains and support for women’s groups among its initiatives.
Kishan Reddy began the press conference by thanking the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi, police, municipal personnel, government agencies and citizens for the peaceful conduct of the Ganesh immersion festivities in Hyderabad. The city’s immersion on September 25 was conducted amid extensive security arrangements.
