Congress identifies 125-130 seats it seeks to contest in alliance with SP in 2027 UP polls

Lucknow, Oct 31 (UNI) The Congress has set the ball rolling for Mission 2027 in Uttar Pradesh by identifying the assembly seats it wants to contest in alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP).
According to sources, the Congress leadership has handed over a list of assembly constituencies to the SP, indicating the seats on which it intends to field its candidates under its own symbol.
Although neither party has officially disclosed the number of seats sought by the Congress, reports suggest that it could be around 125-130. However, the SP leadership is reportedly reluctant to concede such a large number of seats.
Sources in the INDIA alliance said the list was handed over directly to SP president Akhilesh Yadav by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
The list was reportedly prepared following a recent meeting of Congress leaders with Uttar Pradesh party leaders in Delhi, which was also attended by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. During the meeting, feedback was sought from state leaders on various assembly constituencies before finalising the list.
The SP leadership has also sought the names of the Congress candidates proposed for the constituencies to facilitate further discussions on seat-sharing.
Sources said the SP is not willing to concede more than 40-50 seats to the Congress, citing the latter's performance in the previous assembly elections, both in terms of seats won and vote share.
In the last Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the SP contested 347 of the 403 seats on its own symbol, while allotting the remaining constituencies to its alliance partners.
Sources said the SP intends to contest around 340-350 seats on its own symbol in the 2027 elections as well. The party leadership believes that contesting on its 'cycle' symbol is crucial to maintaining its electoral performance.
However, the SP has decided not to announce its candidates for constituencies claimed by the Congress until the seat-sharing negotiations are finalised, sources added.
