Congress leader Gopal Tiwari seeks removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, calls for Supreme Court intervention

Pune, Sep 23 (UNI) Senior Maharashtra Pradesh Congress spokesperson Gopal Tiwari on Wednesday demanded that the Supreme Court take suo motu cognisance of the functioning of the Election Commission of India and seek the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the independence of the poll body was being compromised.
Tiwari's remarks came amid reports that two Election Commissioners had formally raised objections on several occasions to aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Election Commission, however, has rejected reports of differences within the three-member panel and said that decisions were being taken unanimously.
Tiwari alleged that Kumar was taking decisions that were contrary to constitutional values and claimed that the Election Commission was favouring the ruling BJP.
He also criticised the present system for appointing Election Commissioners, alleging that the replacement of the Chief Justice of India by the union Home Minister in the selection panel had compromised the independence of the process.
Referring to the 2024 Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections, Tiwari questioned the increase in the number of electors and the rise in voting after 5.30 pm during the Assembly polls.
He alleged that the Election Commission had not provided satisfactory answers or CCTV footage concerning these issues.
Tiwari also reiterated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations regarding alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and what Gandhi has termed "vote chori".
