Congress raises transparency concerns over voter roll revision

Nagpur, Sep 23 (UNI) Nagpur City Congress president Praful Gudadhe on Wednesday alleged that the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was being conducted through an illegal and arbitrary process, raising concerns over transparency and the possibility of genuine voters being excluded from the rolls.
Addressing a press conference here, Gudadhe claimed that a large number of voters had received notices over discrepancies in their records despite having participated in previous elections.
He questioned the basis on which voters were being flagged and asked why individuals whose names had remained on electoral rolls for years were now being subjected to fresh scrutiny.
The Congress leader alleged that the verification exercise lacked clarity and could create confusion among voters ahead of future elections.
He demanded that the Election Commission make the entire process transparent and publicly disclose the criteria used for identifying discrepancies.
Gudadhe further contended that any action affecting voting rights must strictly adhere to legal provisions and natural justice.
He urged citizens who receive notices to participate in the hearing process and submit the required documents to safeguard their voting rights.
The Election Commission has launched the SIR exercise to update and verify electoral rolls, with hearings for voters receiving notices currently underway in Maharashtra.
