Congress offices attacked in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 30 (UNI) Congress offices came under attack at two places in Thiruvananthapuram district, with the District Congress Committee (DCC) office at Bakery Junction damaged in stone-pelting and the Anavoor Mandalam Committee office at Paliyode Junction near Neyyattinkara set on fire.
The main entrance glass panes of the DCC office were shattered in the attack, which is suspected to have taken place during the night or early Wednesday morning. Congress alleged that BJP workers were behind the attack and lodged a complaint with the police.
The attacks came amid heightened political tensions following the black-flag protest by Youth Congress workers against union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Kollam on September 26. BJP and Yuva Morcha subsequently organised protests against Congress leaders and Ministers at various places in the State.
The Anavoor Mandalam Committee office at Paliyode Junction was also attacked in the early hours. The old tiled building and flex boards kept outside were damaged in the fire. Local residents intervened and put out the flames, preventing further damage.
The incidents followed a confrontation between Youth Congress and Yuva Morcha workers in the Neyyattinkara area on Tuesday. Yuva Morcha workers had intercepted the vehicle of Minister O J Janeesh during a protest, leading to a clash between the two groups.
Senior Congress leaders and elected representatives reached the DCC office after information about the attack emerged. Congress leaders announced protest programmes against the incidents and demanded action against those responsible.
Police inspected the DCC office and initiated an investigation. The identities and political affiliations of those responsible for the attacks have not yet been established by the police.
Meanwhile, the police have said there was no security lapse during the September 26 black-flag protest against Amit Shah's convoy in Kollam. According to the police explanation, the protesters were removed before the convoy reached the spot and the convoy was not obstructed.
The attacks on the Congress offices have added to the political tensions in the district following the series of protests and clashes involving Congress and BJP-linked youth organisations in recent days.
