Congress questions BJP and Bihar Govt’s silence over Bihari workers exploitation in Gujarat

Patna, Oct 11 (UNI) Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee Sunday criticised the BJP and the Bihar government over the alleged exploitation of Bihari migrant workers in Gujarat, questioning their silence on the issue.
Congress media in-charge Ajay Kumar Paswan said here that the call for a “Gaon Chalo Abhiyan” (Return to Villages Campaign) by lakhs of Bihari workers in Gujarat, reportedly in protest against inadequate wages and long working hours, had raised questions about the claims surrounding Gujarat’s development model.
Paswan alleged that the condition of Bihari workers migrating to other states in search of employment exposed the gap between the BJP’s development claims and the realities faced by migrant labourers. He claimed that the proposed return of around 10 lakh Bihari workers from Gujarat highlighted concerns over wages and working conditions.
Paswan said that despite nearly two decades of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rule in Bihar, sufficient employment opportunities had not been created in the state, forcing large numbers of people to migrate to Gujarat and other states for livelihood.
He alleged that Bihari workers were being exploited in factories outside the state and held the BJP and the Janata Dal (United), or JD(U), responsible for the situation. He added that the lack of effective initiatives to generate employment in Bihar had compelled people to leave their homes and families in search of work.
The Congress leader further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had remained silent on the alleged exploitation of Bihari workers in Gujarat and other BJP-ruled states.
He urged the Bihar government to take immediate steps for the welfare and rehabilitation of workers returning from Gujarat and establish concrete mechanisms to provide them with employment within the state.
Paswan also referred to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s repeated interventions on employment and democratic issues. He alleged that governments which came to power through what he described as “vote theft” were also compromising the future of the public and failing to adequately protect voters’ interests.
Describing the return of migrant workers from Gujarat as a matter of serious concern, Paswan asked the Bihar government to create employment opportunities suited to the workers’ skills so that they would not be forced to migrate to other states again in search of a livelihood.
