Congress rebellion puts CM Shivakumar’s chair at risk: Vijayendra

Bengaluru, Oct 20 (UNI) Karnataka BJP president and MLA Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Tuesday alleged that growing dissent within the ruling Congress had put Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s position at risk, while asserting that the BJP had no intention of destabilising the state government.
Reacting to Shivakumar’s remarks over the BJP’s reluctance to support the state government’s efforts to convene an all-party meeting on the sugarcane farmers’ issue, Vijayendra claimed that internal rebellion within the Congress was mounting, forcing the Chief Minister to repeatedly blame the Centre.
“Look at the developments surrounding the sting operation. Congress leaders are rebelling against CM Shivakumar. Against this backdrop, he is repeatedly complaining against the Centre out of desperation,” Vijayendra alleged.
On the proposal to send an all-party delegation to New Delhi to press the Centre on the problems faced by sugarcane farmers, he said the BJP would consult opposition leaders and senior party functionaries before taking a decision on participating in the delegation.
Clarifying the BJP’s position, Vijayendra said the party would continue to remain in opposition for the remaining one-and-a-half years of the government’s tenure and had no need to destabilise or topple the Congress government.
“According to the people’s mandate, we are in the opposition. We will remain there for the next one-and-a-half years. We have no need to destabilise or bring down the Congress government. It is the senior leaders of the ruling party who are preparing to rebel against CM Shivakumar,” he alleged.
Expressing concern over the plight of farmers, Vijayendra said the farming community across Karnataka and the country was facing severe distress. He alleged that farmers had been struggling since the Congress came to power in Karnataka and claimed that the state’s economic condition was deteriorating.
He also accused the state government of failing to accelerate development, manage drought effectively and implement welfare schemes. Referring to the condition of roads in Bengaluru and its surrounding areas, he said public dissatisfaction with the government was growing.
“Even after three-and-a-half years, development has failed to gain momentum. Persons with disabilities are now taking to the streets demanding pensions. The government has forgotten its priorities and is unable to think or act,” he alleged.
Vijayendra further accused the Congress government of writing letters to the Centre and shifting responsibility instead of addressing people’s grievances through concrete action.
He criticised the state government for raising the delimitation issue, alleging that it was creating unnecessary confusion among the public while the Centre was examining the matter.
On drought relief, he alleged that the state government had failed to provide adequate assistance to affected people.
Referring to the ongoing sugarcane farmers’ agitation, Vijayendra said the NDA government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had taken several measures to support sugarcane growers and the sugar industry. These included the implementation of the fair and remunerative price (FRP) mechanism, promotion of ethanol production and policies aimed at value addition in the sugar sector, he said.
He also referred to financial assistance extended to the industry, claiming that the Centre had undertaken several initiatives to support the sector.
Vijayendra said the current agitation by sugarcane farmers was primarily linked to alleged irregularities in weighing their produce at sugar factories and perceived injustice in assessing sugar recovery rates.
He said union Minister Pralhad Joshi had held discussions with union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and a committee had been constituted to examine the issue. The committee’s team was visiting Karnataka, he added.
The Centre was examining possible solutions, Vijayendra said, noting that the issue extended beyond Karnataka and required consideration of farmers’ interests across the country as well as prevailing international market conditions.
