Congress to launch ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ campaign across India: KC Venugopal

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 2 (UNI) The Congress will launch a nationwide ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ campaign from October 2 to 8, bringing together major political parties and leaders of the INDIA bloc in a concerted movement to protect democracy and the voting rights of citizens, AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal said on Friday.
Talking to newspersons in Adoor, Venugopal said the week-long campaign would be a major political struggle against what he alleged was the systematic undermining of the democratic process and the Election Commission.
He alleged that the concerns raised by two Election Commissioners in 14 letters had been ignored, and said the campaign would seek to hold accountable those responsible for undermining the democratic system, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah.
As part of the campaign, MPs would lead a march in Delhi on October 6, while leaders would court arrest to intensify the agitation, he said.
Venugopal said the Kerala Congress had shown its capacity to organise strong protests even amid what he described as government pressure, including black-flag demonstrations against Amit Shah.
“The priority should be to unite and fight against such major threats to people's right to vote,” he said.
On reports repeatedly linking his name to controversies, Venugopal said some sections of the media were unnecessarily dragging him into issues concerning individual Congress leaders.
“Some people are in a hurry to connect even the personal opinions of Congress leaders with my name. Why do this again and again? Haven't you done enough? Do you want more? Whatever the issue, some people seem to like making K.C. Venugopal the accused,” he said.
Venugopal said his position over the past four months had been consistent in supporting the UDF government and that he had not encouraged any statement against the government.
He said defeating the BJP government in the 2029 election was the objective that remained foremost in his mind, alleging that the BJP-led government was undermining the democratic system.
“I am a person ready to make any sacrifice in life for this,” he said.
On differences within the Congress, Venugopal said the party leadership would resolve such issues through discussions within the organisation.
“Congress is a democratic party. It is not a party that cuts people with differences of opinion into pieces and eliminates them. Those with differences will be heard in the forums available to them,” he said.
He said organisational matters should be discussed within the party and not in public, reiterating that he had made his position clear on the issue earlier.
“There are forums within the Congress to discuss such matters. If they cannot be resolved there, there is also an opportunity to bring them to the attention of the leadership,” Venugopal said.
Asked about the appointment of the KPCC president, Venugopal said Sunny Joseph was a strong president of the state unit.
“The KPCC has a strong president in Sunny Joseph. The decision on whether the president should be changed has to be taken by the AICC president,” he said.
