Counting for Karnataka MLC seats on Oct 27; results to test NDA

Bengaluru, Oct 25 (UNI) Counting of votes for four Karnataka Legislative Council constituencies will be held on Tuesday, with the results expected to indicate the electoral strength of the ruling Congress and the coordination between the Opposition BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance.
The elections were held on Friday in the Karnataka South-East Graduates’, Karnataka West Graduates’, Karnataka North-East Teachers’ and Bengaluru Teachers’ constituencies. A total of 43 candidates are in the fray across the four seats.
The South-East Graduates’ constituency recorded a turnout of 73.58 per cent, while the West Graduates’ constituency registered 75.62 per cent. The North-East Teachers’ constituency recorded the highest turnout at 86.97 per cent, followed by Bengaluru Teachers’ at 81.98 per cent.
In the South-East Graduates’ constituency, Congress candidate Shashi Hulikunte Mutt is contesting against BJP nominee KM Suresh. In the West Graduates’ constituency, Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai is challenging sitting BJP MLC SV Sankanur, who won the seat in 2014 and 2020.
The North-East Teachers’ constituency has a contest between Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur and sitting BJP MLC Shashil G Namoshi. In Bengaluru Teachers’, Congress MLC Puttanna is facing JD(S) candidate AP Ranganath.
In the West Graduates’ constituency, counting will begin at 0800 hours at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad. Returning Officer and Belagavi Regional Commissioner KM Janaki has said that counting will be conducted on 14 tables, with the strongroom scheduled to be opened at 0755 hours.
Three-tier security arrangements have been made at the counting centre, with CCTV cameras installed in the counting halls and strongrooms. A total of 212 police personnel have been deployed to maintain security.
The counting process across the four constituencies is expected to be closely watched as the BJP seeks to retain three seats, while the JD(S) aims to wrest Bengaluru Teachers’ from the Congress. The ruling party, meanwhile, is seeking to expand its presence in the Council.
The outcome will provide an indication of the BJP-JD(S) alliance’s ability to transfer votes between its partners and the Congress’s support among graduates and teachers. Though the results are not expected to alter the overall political balance significantly, they could provide both sides with political ammunition ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
