CPI demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over Kerala vigilance inquiry

Hyderabad, Nov 5 (UNI) CPI National Secretary K. Ramakrishna on Thursday demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar following reports of a vigilance inquiry ordered by Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala into an alleged bribery case dating back to Kumar's tenure as Public Works Secretary.
In a statement here, Ramakrishna alleged that a contractor had complained that Kumar demanded a bribe of Rs. 2 crore in connection with a Rs. 17-crore project, following which a criminal case was registered and a vigilance inquiry ordered.
He said such allegations against a serving Chief Election Commissioner were unprecedented and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah for continuing to support Kumar despite demands for his resignation.
Ramakrishna also criticised the Centre over allegations concerning the deletion of voters' names during the electoral roll revision exercise. He stated that there could be no lower point than Amit Shah himself attempting to justify the deletion of 13 crore votes across the country by claiming that three crore foreigners had infiltrated the nation.
He urged the CEC to step down pending the inquiry and demanded that the electoral revision process be halted and the voting rights of eligible citizens restored.
