Daily yoga must be made mandatory in schools: Horatti

Bengaluru, June 21 (UNI) Basavaraj Horatti, Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, on Saturday advocated for the daily practice of yoga in schools, urging the government to make it a compulsory part of the curriculum in primary and secondary education.
Speaking at the international yoga Day celebrations here, Horatti said, “We are blessed to have this opportunity to speak. Our goal today is not just to do yoga and leave—it must become a way of life. I have already initiated steps to make yoga compulsory in education.”
He noted that physical education teachers in the region have undergone pre-training and are already incorporating yoga into their teaching. “If yoga becomes mandatory from an early age, students will develop the discipline and strength needed to become successful officers and leaders in the future,” he said.
Horatti expressed serious concern over the shortage of teachers across the state, particularly in physical education. “There are 29,000 vacant posts for teachers, and the shortage of physical education instructors is critical. In many areas, especially rural ones, a single teacher is managing multiple responsibilities,” he pointed out.
He said he would take up the issue directly with the state Education Minister and the Chief Minister. “We must ensure that no classroom is left with just one teacher. Particularly in backward and hilly regions, comprehensive staffing is crucial,” he added.
Emphasising that yoga should not be celebrated only once a year, Horatti said, “I firmly believe that yoga should be a daily part of school life. I am 110% confident that this can and must be achieved.”
