Delhi chokes as AQI touches 405 in several areas

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) Delhi continued to grapple with worsening air pollution on Monday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) climbing to 324 by evening and several parts of the national capital recording readings above 400, even as relatively cool temperatures, shallow morning fog and largely clear skies offered little respite from the choking conditions.
The city's overall air quality remained in the 'very poor' category, with monitoring stations reporting readings ranging from 242 to 405, according to the AQI dashboard. Rohini recorded the highest AQI at 405, placing it in the 'severe' category, followed by Alipur at 375, Vivek Vihar at 370, Narela at 363 and Chandni Chowk at 358.
High pollution levels were also reported at Akshardham and ITO (349 each), Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (343), India Gate-Janpath (335) and Burari (308). Among the stations recording comparatively lower pollution levels were Aya Nagar at 276, IGI Airport Terminal 3 at 263, and Anand Vihar at 242, all falling in the 'poor' category.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city's AQI had touched 312 at 9 am, marking the first time this season that Delhi's air quality entered the 'very poor' category.
Under the CPCB classification, an AQI of 0-50 is considered 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor' and 401-500 'severe'. Prolonged exposure to such polluted air can trigger respiratory discomfort even among otherwise healthy individuals, while posing greater risks to people suffering from existing respiratory and cardiovascular ailments.
The deterioration comes despite intensified pollution-control interventions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has permitted the use of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR between 6 am and 7 am and 8 pm and 10 pm on November 7 and 8. The relaxation comes with restrictions on bursting crackers within 300 metres of hospitals, nursing homes, primary and district health centres, old-age homes and designated silence zones. The complete prohibition on firecrackers will come into force again from November 9.
Authorities have also stepped up restrictions on vehicular emissions, with non-Delhi vehicles below the BS-VI emission standard being turned away at the capital's borders since the weekend. The Delhi High Court on Monday declined to grant interim relief against the restriction.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), meanwhile, has forecast predominantly clear skies across Delhi over the coming days, with shallow mist likely during morning hours on November 3 and 4 and again on November 5. No rainfall is expected during the forecast period up to November 8.
Weather observations at Safdarjung, Delhi's base meteorological station, recorded a maximum temperature of 29.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 16.4 degrees Celsius on Monday. The maximum was one degree below normal, while the minimum was 1.1 degrees above normal. No rainfall was recorded during the preceding 24 hours.
The IMD said shallow fog had occurred at a few places in the capital during the morning. North-westerly winds, which had reached speeds of 10-15 kmph during the preceding 24 hours, prevailed over the city.
The maximum temperature is likely to remain between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius, and the minimum between 14 and 18 degrees Celsius over the next seven days. On Tuesday, the temperature is expected to range between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius, with the minimum settling between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius.
