Delhi: LG directs DDA to hold heritage walk at Sanjay Van

New Delhi, Nov 1 (UNI) In a step towards connecting people with national capital's heritage, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Sandhu has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to organize a guided heritage walk at the Sanjay Van on November 14.
The heritage walk will be conducted in association with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Delhi Chapter.
Notbaly, this time it will be the second walk in the series and the guided tour will provide visitors with an opportunity to explore the area's extensive history and understand the significance of its historic structures.
The participation fee for the event is going to be Rs. 500 plus GST per person.
The walk will cover five locations, including the Historic Well, the Large Fortification, the Small Fortification, the Bastion near the Small Fortification and the Lal Kot Wall.
The Historic Well, located near the Large Fortification, is understood to date to the Delhi Sultanate period and represents Delhi's traditional water infrastructure.
Constructed with a deep, circular masonry shaft, the well was a vital source of water for communities and travellers in the surrounding landscape.
The Large Fortification comprises some of the best-preserved remains of Lal Kot-Qila Rai Pithora, Delhi's first fortified city, built by the Tomars in the 11th century CE and expanded by the Chauhans in the 12th century.
These historic walls reflect early Rajput military architecture and mark the beginning of Delhi's medieval history.
The Small Fortification according to folklore is associated with the walled city of Prithviraj Chauhan. On the site, there are the remnants of a Mihrab on the western wall and two minarets in the corners.
These structures which preserve important evidence of Delhi's early medieval history and its earliest fortified capital were in a state of severe neglect, and now DDA carried out the conservation and restoration works to protect and improve their accessibility.
The Small Fortification has also been recently conserved by DDA, and situated near the LG Rock Café which is frequented by a lot of visitors daily.
Under LG Sandhu's guidance, the DDA has signed a six-month MoU with INTACH (Delhi Chapter) to organise guided heritage and nature walks at DDA's heritage and green spaces for 6 months.
The initiative follows LG's Heritage Walk at Sanjay Van, where he also launched the e-book on the Delhi Ridge and directed DDA to focus on conserving the city's ecology, protecting its historic structures and making its heritage more accessible to the public.
The first walk under the initiative commenced at Mehrauli Archaeological Park on 24 October 2026.
The initiative also aligns with MPD-2047, which emphasises heritage conservation alongside planned and sustainable urban development.
