Delhi: LG meets senior police officials to assess on-ground outcomes of citizen-centric policing

New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Delhi Lieutenant Governor, Taranjit Singh Sandhu today interacted with senior Police officials, including Assistant Commissioners of Police and above ranks, at the force Headquarters in the presence of Commissioner of Police, and assessed measurable, on-ground outcomes of citizen-centric policing.

Notably, this was the LG's second visit to the PHQ, and the interaction focused not merely on initiatives undertaken since his first visit in the month of June, but on what had changed on the ground in terms of measurable outcomes and achievements of the department.
The interaction also focused on what had been the public response to initiatives taken and the gaps that remain and what further action were being taken to bridge these gaps.

Sandhu emphasized that the objective must be simple and clear, which is to have a safer Delhi, and greater confidence of citizens in police.

Regarding citizen-centric policing, the LG directed that every police station be a place where citizens feel heard, helped and safe, calling for a stronger connection between police stations, beat officers and the communities they serve, along with increased visible presence and strengthened foot and motorcycle patrolling in vulnerable, crime-prone and high-footfall areas.

Sandhu noted that particular attention should be given to areas around schools, colleges, markets and transport hubs.

The LG also directed that Jan Sunwai grievances be tracked through a digital mechanism, with every complaint acknowledged, tracked and acted upon within a defined timeline and complaints pertaining to other departments be promptly forwarded to the concerned agency.

Stressing that women's safety is non-negotiable, the LG said women must be safe on every street, at every hour and directed the continuation of focused action against eve-teasing and harassment in public spaces under Operation Shishtachar.

Citing Goa Police's "Pink Force" as a model, he directed Delhi Police to come up a similar “Pink Force” that comprised of a dedicated Women-Centric Patrol Unit, comprising trained women personnel.

They should be deployed at schools, colleges, metro stations and other vulnerable hotspots for high-visibility deterrence and rapid response, particularly during vulnerable hours.

The LG also directed regular, interactive awareness programmes in schools on POCSO and child safety, cybercrime, substance abuse and road safety, with each Police District nominating a Nodal Officer and preparing a quarterly calendar for such sessions.

On enforcement priorities, the LG directed sustained, intelligence-led action against drug trafficking under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and called for strengthening the capability of police stations to handle cybercrime complaints and preserve digital evidence, in coordination with specialised cyber units for cases requiring immediate intervention.

On traffic management, he directed identification and monitoring of major congestion points, with visible presence during peak hours and strengthened real-time CCTV and Traffic Control Room monitoring.


The LG directed senior officers to hold fixed-hour grievance hearings at Headquarters, timely promotions particularly for lower ranks and women personnel and the development of police colonies as Model Zero-Waste Colonies.
