Delhi: Much relief for Chhatarpur from monsoon water-logging, Rs 26 cr plan sanctioned to end misery

New Delhi, Oct 21 (UNI) Since several years, residents of Delhi’s Sultanpur, Gadaipur village, Jaunapur village and nearby areas have faced water-logging in the monsoons, and had to wade through flooded roads. Now to provide much-needed relief, the Delhi Government has granted administrative approval and expenditure sanction of Rs 25.60 crore to instal a modern drainage network.
A modern drainage network and two pump houses will be set up at the Mandi Road and Bandh Road in South Delhi's Chhatarpur area, in a move to provide permanent solution to one of the city's most persistent water- logging hotspots.
The project follows a site inspection, conducted by PWD and Water Minister Parvesh Verma in July, when heavy rain had left the stretch badly waterlogged.
During the visit, local residents told the Minister that the road floods every monsoon, disrupting daily life, commuting and businesses, and urged that the problem be taken up on priority.
Verma had assured them of a permanent solution. The sanction given on Wednesday will help to deliver on that promise made by the minister.
Earlier, this road was under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), but now, under the principle of "One Government, One Governance," responsibility for it has been brought under the PWD, enabling faster decisions, a single point of accountability and integrated planning of road and drainage works.
The project includes installing 710 metres of precast drain on each side, 1,420 metres in total, on the Mandi Road, and on Bandh Road, a total of 1,920 metres of precast drain along one side, while two pump houses will be set up to clear storm water quickly.
On the Mandi Road which is total four km, it will be rebuilt as a strong bituminous road under the South Zone combined tender. Financial bids have been opened and the work will be awarded shortly.
The reason behind the flooding of the road is that the Mandi Road connects CDR Chowk to the Delhi-Haryana border via Jaunapur village, and the area is low-lying.
Earlier, rainwater would drain through a natural channel into Haryana, but rapid urbanisation has closed that outlet.
Speaking on the issue, Parvesh Verma said, "When I visited Mandi Road, residents told me clearly that water-logging had made their lives difficult for years and that it must be fixed on priority. I gave them my word, and today we are keeping it.
"For too long, the people of Sultanpur, Gadaipur, Jaunapur and nearby areas were told to simply live with this problem. Every monsoon, the same pumps came out and the same promises were made.”
“PWD has taken charge of this road, and with Rs 25.60 crore sanctioned, we are building precast drains on both sides of Mandi Road, a drain along Bandh Road and two pump houses. This is a permanent solution, not a temporary patch,” he added.
