Delhi Police strikes hard on cyber crime ecosystem

New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) In a major crackdown on cyber crime and cyber criminals, Delhi Police conducted the sixth edition of its intelligence-led operation CyHawk on October 28 and 29, resulting in the arrest of 1,732 persons.
All 15 territorial Districts of the police, the Crime Branch (Cyber) and the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit took part, resulting in detention and round up of 4,979 suspects for verification across the national capital.
The operation went beyond the individual fraudster, and the police teams targeted the people who supply bank accounts, SIM cards and payment infrastructure to fraud networks, along with those who run call centres and launder proceeds through cash and cryptocurrency.
With this sixth edition of the operation CyHawk, arrests have so far crossed 3,300, an official stated. CyHawk 6.0 delivered sharper outcomes than its previous edition on 16–17th June, with a rise in the new FIRs by about 24 per cent, and complaints worked out by about 46 per cent, and action in complaints from outside Delhi by about 57 per cent.
yber criminals deliberately operate far from their victims, and to break that cover, 283 Delhi Police teams went outstation during the operation , conducting raids, technical and local surveillance and arrests across at least 17 States and 5 union Territories — from Keralam, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in the south to Jammu, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in the north, and from Gujarat and Maharashtra to West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha in the east.
These visits produced some of the operation's most significant arrests, including a Jamtara-linked Credit Card syndicate trapped in Dhanbad, a matrimonial fraud gang from Durg-Bhilai, mule-account suppliers in Kanpur and Greater Noida, and account facilitators in Mumbai, Lucknow, Rajasthan and Punjab.
Gangs using a wide range of methods were targeted, including fraudulent mobile apps and phishing messages (South-West District), fake KYC calls (Shahdara), impersonation of corporate executives, officials and payment-company staff (Central, Shahdara and South-East Districts.)
Action was also taken on online shopping, investment and matrimonial frauds (North, Central, North-East and Rohini), also regarding loan-app sextortion (Outer District.) The operation also struck hard at the infrastructure behind organised fraud, with the Dwarka, South-West and East Districts dismantling illegal call centres that ran impersonation, fake-business and extortion scams against citizens and traders nationwide"
Notably, one of these, busted by East District, operated from a moving vehicle to evade location tracing. UNI APS CDS
