Delhi PWD Min. conducts midnight inspection of road work, sets Nov.30 deadline for 600 km of roads

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) In a late-night inspection aimed at accelerating the national capital's road improvement drive, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh visited Africa Avenue past midnight to take stock of ongoing resurfacing work and assess the quality of execution on the ground.
During the surprise inspection, the Minister directed officials to ensure that quality is not compromised at any stage and that the work is completed within the stipulated timeline.
A third-party agency has also been deployed with specialised equipment to check the quality and thickness of the road surface, ensuring that the work meets prescribed standards, officials said.
Singh has set a clear target of improving and resurfacing 600 km of major roads by November 30, with the objective of making these stretches smooth, durable and pothole-free ahead of the winter season.
Speaking during the inspection, Parvesh Sahib Singh said, “Our target is clear: 600 km of Delhi’s major roads will be improved by November 30. I have instructed officials that there will be no compromise on quality. Every road being resurfaced must meet the required standards, and the work must be completed within the deadline,” he added.
The Minister said that contractors would be held accountable for the quality and long-term maintenance of the roads, and as per the new conditions, the agency executing the road work will also be responsible for its maintenance for the next five years, ensuring greater accountability and durability.
He also explained that road resurfacing work had faced delays due to disruption in the supply of bitumen amid global tensions and ongoing conflicts, which had also led to a significant increase in its prices.
“There was a disruption in bitumen supply and prices had increased substantially because of the global situation. This affected the pace of work. Fresh tenders have now been issued and work is being taken up again on a priority basis. We will make full use of the available working window before winter sets in,” he informed.
The Minister emphasised that road surfacing becomes difficult once severe winter conditions begin. Therefore, the department has been directed to accelerate the work and complete the identified 600 km before the winter season significantly affects road-laying operations. UNI APS CDS
