Democrats wrest control of both chambers of Congress in sweeping midterm victories, projections show

Washington, Nov 4 (UNI) Democrats have wrested control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate from Republicans, scoring sweeping victories in the midterm elections in a major setback for President Donald Trump, as results continued to pour in on Wednesday.
Capitalising on Trump's historically low approval ratings and growing public discontent over the economy and cost of living, Democrats flipped several Republican-held Senate seats across the country, including in traditionally Republican states, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in Congress.
Among the biggest breakthroughs is Michigan, where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers, becoming the first Muslim American elected to the US Senate, according to media projections. El-Sayed, a physician and former public health official, also claimed victory at an election-night rally in Detroit.
"You took a chance on the unlikeliest of candidates... Michigan, I cannot wait to serve you," he told supporters.
In his victory speech, El-Sayed said Americans should not have to struggle to afford basic necessities in one of the world's wealthiest countries.
"Michigan, it just shouldn't be this hard. It shouldn't be this hard to buy a second bag of groceries or to fill your tank," he said.
"It shouldn't be this hard to afford a home. It shouldn't be this hard to see a doctor in the richest and most powerful country in the world," he added.
Taking aim at US foreign policy spending, he said taxpayers should be able to ensure their money is spent on domestic needs rather than military operations overseas.
"It shouldn't be this hard to pay your taxes and know that that money is going to be spent on you and your kids instead of dropping bombs on somebody else and their kids," he said.
Democrats also registered victories in several other Senate races, flipping seats in Kansas, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina, according to projections.
In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton won the Senate seat, a breakthrough in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in nearly a century.
In Iowa, former Paralympian Josh Turek is projected to defeat Republican opposition and capture the seat held by Republican Senator Joni Ernst.
Maine Democrat Troy Jackson is projected to defeat Republican incumbent Susan Collins, who has represented the state in the Senate for nearly three decades.
In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown is projected to reclaim the Senate seat, while Texas Democrat James Talarico is also projected to win his race.
In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews was projected to defeat Republican incumbent Lindsey Graham, according to the emerging results.
The Alaska Senate race remained too close to call.
Reacting to the Democratic gains, former president Barack Obama said the election results sent a clear message about the kind of political leadership Americans wanted.
"Tonight, the American people sent a clear message – they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face," Obama wrote on X.
He said Democratic candidates had taken a chance by contesting seats in areas long considered difficult to win.
"While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves ... prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future," he added.
Meanwhile, Republican Tommy Tuberville won the Alabama gubernatorial election, defeating Democrat Doug Jones, as per reports.
The Democratic victories are set to reshape the political landscape in Washington, giving the party control of both chambers of Congress for the remainder of Trump's presidency. UNI AAB MCR
