US midterm losses for Republicans could reshape Washington-Israel ties: report

Tel Aviv, Nov 4 (UNI) Republicans losing their congressional majority in the US midterm elections could change the relationship between Israel and the United States, the Jerusalem Post said in an analysis published on Wednesday.
The article, headlined “Democratic Tsunami in the US: Three Major Challenges Facing Israel After Republican Defeat,” said the results come as the Democratic Party is shifting its views on Israel, the war with Iran and the strategic partnership between Washington and Tel Aviv.
It identified three areas of impact: President Donald Trump’s Iran policy, the balance of power in Congress and the 2028 presidential race.
The newspaper said the war with Iran has proved politically costly for Republicans. It noted that commentators at Fox News, a network seen as friendly to the party, had said the results could have been very different without the war, and that Trump had acknowledged “Iran had a share in the loss.”
Exit polls showed 62% of participants opposed a war with Iran, according to the analysis.
“The political message given to Trump is clear: the American public is not very keen on a long war in the Middle East,” the article said, asking how the president would turn that message into policy.
It outlined two possible courses. Trump could step up diplomacy and make concessions to Tehran, presenting any deal as a diplomatic success that extracts the United States from the conflict. Alternatively, he could end the war with a short, effective operation, declare the United States had achieved its objectives and quickly reduce U.S. forces in the region.
In both cases, Israel’s interests may diverge from the White House’s priorities, which could become a main source of tension between the allies, the article said.
Conversely, the analysis points out that in both scenarios, Israel's interests may not align with the White House's priorities, and this could become one of the main sources of tension in relations between the two countries.
The loss of the Republican majority could also carry significant consequences for Israel, the analysis said, as the new balance of power may be reflected in Washington’s policy toward the country.
It said calls within the Democratic Party to reduce U.S. military aid to Israel, attach political conditions to it and reassess the “special relationship” were gaining support, and that views once held by a limited segment of the party were becoming more visible.
The article notes that attitudes toward Israel are changing within the Democratic Party, and that this shift could shape debates about U.S. Middle East policy ahead of the 2028 presidential race.
It pointed to the political success of Zohran Mamdani and Abdul El-Sayed, both vocal critics of Israel’s conduct in Gaza and of Israeli influence in US politics, as examples that other Democratic candidates could follow. It suggested 2028 contenders might take a more critical stance toward Israel than in past campaigns.UNI AAB
