Dilip Ghosh attacks Mamata over Cong-Left outreach, dismisses CJP protest against CEC

Kolkata, Oct 3 (UNI) West Bengal Panchayats and Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh on Saturday launched a sharp attack on former chief minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee over her appeal for opposition unity ahead of the Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly bypolls.
Ghosh said the former chief minister was prepared to ally with any political force to safeguard her own political existence.
"She can join forces with Yam Raj (the God of Death) to serve her own purpose and protect her own corrupt interests," Ghosh claimed outside Eco Park in New Town on Saturday morning.
Reacting to Banerjee's decision to back the Congress in Nandigram and the appeal to the Congress and Left parties to join hands in protecting polling booths in Rejinagar, Ghosh said Banerjee had consistently supported the Congress while helping revive the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M).
"She has supported the Congress all this time, revived the CPI(M) and, to save her own existence, she would even strike a deal with 'Yamdoot'. What is CJP then?" he said.
Ghosh was referring to Banerjee's recent expression of solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The minister also dismissed the protests against Kumar, alleging that the opposition was attempting to manufacture an issue ahead of the forthcoming civic elections in West Bengal.
"Elections are being held in several states across the country, and before that, the INDIA alliance emerges from somewhere. There is a corporation election in Bengal, so they need an issue," he said.
"But they have no issue left, either at the national level or in Bengal. They are merely making absurd statements in an attempt to get some media attention, and nothing else," Ghosh added.
Banerjee's outreach to the Congress in Nandigram followed the withdrawal of her faction's candidate, Sanchita Pradhan Dey, from the October 6 bypoll. She subsequently extended support to Congress nominee Milan Pradhan, presenting the move as an effort to strengthen opposition unity.
In Rejinagar, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh appealed to the Congress and Left parties to cooperate in protecting polling booths, while allowing voters to exercise their franchise in favour of their preferred candidates.
The appeal came amid a fractured opposition contest in the constituency, with rival Trinamool factions, the Congress, Left parties, the BJP and other political outfits in the fray.
Banerjee has also backed the CJP's agitation against the CEC, adding another dimension to the opposition's criticism of the EC ahead of the bypolls.
Polling in Nandigram and Rejinagar is scheduled for October 6, with counting on October 9.
