Disproportionate assets case: Majithia’s brother-in-law gets bail before arrest

Chandigarh, Oct 31 (UNI) A Mohali court today granted anticipatory bail to Gajpat Singh Grewal, brother-in-law of former Punjab minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, in a case of disproportionate assets.
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau told the court that there was no need for custodial interrogation of Grewal, according to reports.
The relief came days after the Vigilance Bureau filed a supplementary chargesheet in the case naming Grewal and several individuals and companies, whose financial dealings were investigated during the probe.
The court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge granted Grewal’s plea after the investigating agency submitted that the investigation in respect of him was completed and there was no need to take him into custody, sources said.
The development is a reversal of the earlier stand taken by the Vigilance Bureau. Earlier, the agency had sought custody of Grewal for interrogation on the basis of his alleged role in a conspiracy to acquire and conceal assets disproportionate to the known sources of income of Majithia.
The agency had also charged Grewal with not cooperating with the investigation even after he was served notices, compelling it to move for arrest warrants and begin the process to declare him a proclaimed offender.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court then took up the matter. The High Court disposed of Grewal's petition on April 27 after the state informed it that he had secured interim bail from the special court on April 10 and that the arrest warrants and proclamation proceedings had become infructuous.
The latest reported order comes after the Vigilance Bureau filed a supplementary chargesheet on October 28 probing property records, bank transactions, and financial dealings of Majithia, his relatives, and business associates.
The Vigilance Bureau has alleged that financial transactions worth hundreds of crores of rupees involved companies and individuals linked to Majithia. These claims are still before the courts.
Majithia, arrested in June 2025 and later granted regular bail by the Supreme Court in February this year, has always denied any wrongdoing.
Majithia had earlier this week reacted to the latest chargesheet and called the allegations a “bundle of lies” and said that he had full faith in the judiciary.
The case of disproportionate assets was filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act on June 25, 2025. Later, the Vigilance Bureau invoked the provision of criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code regarding the alleged involvement of Grewal.
The probe examined the financial transactions of companies allegedly linked to Majithia and his family members, including the source of funds and purchase of properties.
The court has granted anticipatory bail to Grewal to save him from arrest in the case, with conditions. That is not an acquittal. That is not a determination on the allegations against him.
The criminal case against Majithia and the other accused is still on.
