Nurpur (HP), Oct 31 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta on Saturday described Sanskrit as the soul of India and the foundation of its civilisation, culture and rich intellectual heritage, stressing the need to preserve and promote the ancient language among younger generations.
Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day All India Sanskrit Bharati seminar at KBVM Institute of Nursing in Malkwal, near Nurpur, the Governor said Sanskrit had preserved India's cultural consciousness for thousands of years and connected generations through its rich literary and philosophical traditions.
The Governor formally inaugurated the seminar by lighting the ceremonial lamp and congratulated Sanskrit Bharati office-bearers, organisers and participants from across the country.
He said India's great scriptures, including the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana and Mahabharata, had carried forward an invaluable tradition of knowledge, philosophy, science, ethics and human values.
Referring to the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Governor said the nation was remembering the contribution of the Iron Man of India, whose determination and visionary leadership led to the integration of nearly 562 princely states into the Indian Union, strengthening the country's unity and integrity.
He also highlighted Patel's significant role in the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.
On the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, the Governor administered the national unity pledge to those present. Gupta emphasised that the study of Indian history should not remain confined to empires and foreign invasions, but should also give due recognition to ancient Indian sages, scholars, scientists and intellectual traditions.
He cited Aryabhata, Panini, Sushruta and Bhaskaracharya as eminent scholars whose contributions enriched global knowledge and science. He also described the ancient universities of Takshashila and Nalanda as symbols of India's glorious educational heritage, which attracted students from across the world.
Stressing the importance of preserving mother tongues, he said their regular use in homes and families was essential for their survival and development.
Appreciating Sanskrit Bharati's efforts, the Governor said the organisation was doing commendable work to popularise Sanskrit and make it a language of everyday communication.
Establishment of Central Sanskrit Universities, promotion of Sanskrit studies and research, and preservation of ancient manuscripts were also important initiatives in this direction.
He stressed the need to integrate India's ancient knowledge systems with modern technology, scientific research, artificial intelligence and digital innovations to realise the vision of a developed nation. Sanskrit literature contained valuable knowledge in mathematics, astronomy, Ayurveda and other disciplines, which needed to be researched through an authentic and scientific approach and presented before the world, he said.
Highlighting Himachal Pradesh's cultural and linguistic heritage, Gupta said the state was a land of ancient sages, temples and rich traditions. Several local dialects carried Sanskrit words and linguistic influences, while the Gaddi dialect of Bharmour in Chamba and the Kashmiri language also reflected a deep Sanskrit influence.
Ancient inscriptions and material preserved in the Tankri script in the Chamba region, he said, represented the state's rich linguistic and cultural legacy. He recalled that Sanskrit was accorded the status of the second official language of Himachal Pradesh in 2019 and urged universities and educational institutions to promote its study, research and innovation.
He urged Sanskrit Bharati to encourage interest in the language in every university and college and motivate students to pursue its study.
Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh Central University Prof Sat Prakash Bansal said the All India seminar was not merely an event but a living example of India's unity in diversity. He expressed confidence that the gathering would promote dialogue and mutual respect among different cultures while strengthening fraternity and goodwill in society.
Sanskrit Bharati All India President Ramesh Kumar Pandey, All India General Secretary Satyanarayan Bhatt, state president Dr Rajesh Sharma, former Himachal Pradesh minister and reception committee chairman Rakesh Pathania, former Bhatiyat MLA Vikram Jarial and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
